Getting the best curly hair wash and go, for me, has always been finding the best right mix of products, and having a bit of patience with my hair. I’ve learned that it’s not just about what I use, but how I use it. Technique makes such a difference. Making sure my hair is well moisturized, taking the time to apply the products evenly, and really paying attention to what my curls need that day, has change everything for me.
I truly believe that a great curly hair wash and go comes down to learn your curl pattern and respecting it. Some days my hair needs more moisture, while other days it needs lighter products. And I’ve stopped fighting that. Once I figured out my methode and stop rushing the process, this routine honestly became the easiest hairstyle. It’s the one I always go back because I know how my curls are going to respond. Once you take the time to understand what your hair needs and stay consistent with your technique, it can become that go-to hairstyle for you too.
Before we get into my full curly hair wash and go routine and tips, I have a quick note about my hair. My curls are between 3C and 4A, but my strands are very fine, so they get weighed down easily. Every product I mention in this post was purchased with my own money and personally used and texted by me. If I’m recommending it, it’s because it truly worked for my curls.
Now, let’s dive in!
1. Start with Clean and Hydrated Hair
I belive that the best curly hair wash and go starts in the shower. I like to use a shampoo with natural ingredients for my weekly washes, and at least twice a month I follow up with a deep cleanser to remove build up and refresh my scalp. After washing and deep conditioning my hair I gently wrap my hair with a microfiber towel to lock in moisture until Im ready to start ‘the styling.
2. Apply Products on Soaking Wet Hair
After many trial and errors I discover that applying products when my hair still soaking wet gives and helps my curls clump together for better definition and less frizz. Water helps distribute the products evenly and encourages hydration which leads to better definition.
I like to divide my hair in sections and apply the products by running the fingers through my hair to distribute them evenly. at the same time, I smooth the product over the hair to prevent frizz, and scrunch with my hands to encourage the curls to form.
3. Layer Products the Right Way
My secret to a long lasting wash and go routine is layering the products the right way, it’s like building a structure for your curls.
- The way I like to layer my products is by first separating the hair into sections, this makes it much easier to ensure every strand of hair get an even amount of product.
- The first product I apply to my Hair is a serum or oil, preferably one with heat protection, I find that applying this first helps lock in moisture and keeps my hair feeling more hydrated.
- Next I add the leave in conditioner for hydration and softness. Since I have fine hair, I prefer to use a light weight, non-greasy formula made with gentle, natural derived ingredients.
- This is the most important product of all, the curl cream or curl activator, because it enhances the curl pattern and helps reduce frizz. For this step, I like to use a slightly heavier cream to add some weight to my fine hair, which also help create volume once the hair is completly dry.
- Another optional step is to apply gel on top of the curl cream. Gels are usually used to add hold and definition. I’ve tried to add gel into my curly hair wash and go routine many times, but most gels left my hair sticky , dry or dull. There are only a few that work well with my curl pattern, and using only a small amount gives the best result for fine hair 3C – 4A. See below for my top picks.

4. Diffuse and Don’t Touch While Drying
This step requires patience but it’s essential to get the best results for your curly hair wash and go routine. After applying your products, avoid touching your hair while it dryes, as this can cause frizz, disrupt curl clump and reduce definition. You can either let your hair hair dry for a natural finish and less damaged, or use a diffuser for faster drying and extra volume, I prefer diffusing as it also helps reduce shrinkage.
5. Scrunch Out the Crunch
Once my hair is completly dry, I like to use a coin-sized drop of oil and rub it between my hands to warm it up. Then I gently scrunch and shake my hair to separate the curls and add a little volume. I personally don’t overdo this, as I prefer well defined curls over extra volume. This step is also specially hepful if you’ve used a strong hold gel, because the warmth of the oil helps soften and brake the gel cast slightly, leaving soft, touchable curls.
How to Make your Wash and Go Last Longer
- Sleeping on a satin or silk pillowcase helps minimize frizz and protect your curls overnight
- Use a satin bonet or scarf
- Whenever possible, wear your hair in a pineapple to help elongate the curls and keep ends defined
- Avoid touching or over-handling your hair during the day
- If necessary, refresh curls in the morning with a light mist of water and leave in conditioner
With proper care your wash and go will last longer, and your curls can stay defined from 5-8 days
Quick Tips for Best Results:
- Apply products to soaking wet hair, I like to use a continuous spray bottle with a fine mist
- Rake or scrunch the hair
- When showering, use a plastic shower cap to protect your curls from moisture and prevent frizz
